The Gay and Lesbian Community Center (GLCC) and Lavender Events Present Check for Breast Cancer Research

Lavender Events Raises $1,000 for the Memorial Cancer Institute-Breast Cancer Center

On June 24, 2009, Paul Hyman, Executive Director of the GLCC and Wendy Phillips, Chairperson of Lavender Events presented a $1,000 check to the Memorial Foundation/Breast Cancer Fund at Memorial Cancer Institute-Breast Cancer Center in Hollywood, Florida.

Accepting the check on behalf of Memorial were Drs. Alejandra Perez, Sandra Franco, Carmen Calfa, Aruna Mani and Raja Mudad.

The funds were raised in September of 2008 at a dance at the GLCC, sponsored by Lavender Events - Stella’s Ball. The annual dance honors “Stella” a mother, daughter, partner and community member who lost her battle with breast cancer. The purpose of Stella’s Ball is to raise awareness of breast cancer in the community and promote treatment to women with limited medical access.

The second annual Stella’s Ball will be held November 7th at the new GLCC campus in Wilton Manors.

According to Paul Hyman, “The GLCC is committed to supporting all efforts to fund research and treatment for breast cancer. And our own Lavender Events has taken this effort to a new level and we are very proud of them”.

MISSION: The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of South Florida (GLCCSF) serves the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender community. We provide information, education, advocacy, support, human services, cultural experiences and social opportunities.

The center works to foster personal development and quality of life for the entire community. We embrace individuality and diversity, work together, and promote awareness, acceptance, celebration and pride.

WHAT: The annual Gay and Lesbian Community Center of South Florida’s Stars of the Rainbow Awards was held on Sunday, March 1, 2009. The individuals, businesses and organizations who received the award we re chosen because they exemplify the spirit of volunteerism and/or activism and they have represented the community in a positive light and have supported the efforts of the GLCC.

This year’s award winners are:

• Business, Organization & Media: South Florida Blade and Hotspots Magazine?
• Community Star: Terry DeCarlo (Public Relations & Marketing Manager, Broward House); Nadine Smith (Executive Director, Equality South Florida)
?• Fundraising Board Member: Dale Russell (President)
?• Volunteer: Tyler Healis (former GLCC Board member); Lucille Marino and Corinne Wyatt (President and Vice-President of Women In Network)?• Alan Schubert Humanitarian Award : Glen Weinzimer (Founder, Smart Ride)

The community was invited to make their award nominations on the GLCC website. “The GLCC ’s Nomination Committee evaluated the nominees using very select criteria,” said Robert Boo, Director of Development for the Center. “Those chosen by the committee to receive the award were chosen by what they’ve done for the community and how what they have done impacted the lives of the LGBT community over the last year or over a period of time.”?

Over the years, the Stars of the Rainbow Gala & Celeb ration has become the GLCC’s largest fundraiser of the year and the South Florida gay society’s most anticipated event. This year’s Gala will take place at the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six, 2301 S.E. 17th Street Causeway in Fort Lauderdale starting at 5:00 p.m.

The Gala included a VIP reception at the Pier-Top Lounge, a general reception in the resort’s Crystal Atrium, a silent auction with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, a dinner and honoree video presentation, a live performance by Jody Watley and dancing.
